History

The Northeast Greek Leadership Association (NGLA) has a long history of service to students and professionals in the Northeast. At our core, the Association focuses on personal, professional, and leadership development through educational programming and initiatives.

NGLA was created through a merger between the Northeast Interfraternity Conference (NEIFC – Founded November 15, 1982) and the Northeast Panhellenic Conference (NEPC – Founded March 1, 1984). The NEPC was created via a resolution of the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) because the Northeast was the only area of the country that did not have a regional conference for sorority women. During this meeting it was decided, by a vote of the colleges and universities in attendance, that the women hold their yearly meeting with the NEIFC.

During the conference in 2000, the institutions attending the conference were asked for their consent to explore the merger of the two organizations into a new organization. Merging would avoid the duplication of effort and expense created by operating as two organizations and to provide more diverse programming opportunities for students and professionals in the Northeast. Consent was granted by the institutions and the NGLA was officially created on August 1, 2000.

Over the last 20 years, the Association has advanced in so many ways. We’ve added a Local Organization Institute and Culturally Based Organization Institute to our conference programming. We’ve expanded a formal partnership with the National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations, Inc., to increase our educational programming offerings for members of NALFO organizations. In January 2017 we hired our then Virtual Assistant, now Operations Manager. We’ve invested a great deal of time and resources in elevating the business operations of the Association. On June 19, 2018 we received our 501(c)3 non-profit status and in 2020 we’re launching the NGLA Fund to help advance the mission of the Association and our educational programming efforts.
