Assistant Vice President and Dean of Students
Worcester Polytechnic Institute
Bio
Dr. Emily L. Perlow serves as the Assistant Vice President and Dean of Students at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). In this capacity, she leads a dedicated team focused on enhancing the holistic co-curricular experience, aiming to remove barriers that affect student success and promote an inclusive campus environment.
Dr. Perlow earned her Ph.D. in Educational Policy and Leadership with a focus on Higher Education from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2018. Her dissertation explored the relationships between hazing, masculine norm conformity, and adult play. She also holds a Master’s degree in College Student Personnel from Bowling Green State University and a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from The Ohio State University.
With over 13 years of experience working with STEM students at WPI, Dr. Perlow has held various roles, including Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Student Activities. Her professional interests encompass analyzing systems, processes, and cultures that inhibit student success, enhancing the experiences of marginalized populations in the STEM pipeline, and addressing deviant behaviors among college populations, particularly hazing.
Beyond her responsibilities at WPI, Dr. Perlow is actively involved in professional organizations. She has served as Chair of the Northeast Greek Leadership Association Board of Directors and held various roles within Alpha Gamma Delta. Additionally, she is a Research Affiliate at the Center for Student Success Research at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a Lecturer in the Counselor Education and Family Therapy program at Central Connecticut State University.
Dr. Perlow’s contributions to the field are also reflected in her publications, which include works on hazing prevention, financial aid information for students with disabilities, and fraternity and sorority life.
Director of Student Life
The College of New Jersey (TCNJ)
Bio
Dave Conner is the Director of Student Life at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), where he oversees various aspects of student involvement, including fraternity and sorority life, student organizations, and large-scale campus programs.
Throughout his tenure at TCNJ, Conner has been instrumental in enhancing the student experience by supporting student government, class councils, and facilitating fraternity and sorority expansion.
His dedication to student development and organizational growth has significantly contributed to fostering a vibrant campus community at TCNJ.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Conner received top honors from the National Panhellenic Conference as the Outstanding Panhellenic Advisor in 2013.
Additionally, TCNJ’s Panhellenic Council established the David E. Conner Panhellenic Excellence Scholarship in his honor, reflecting his lasting impact on the campus community.
Managing Director of Training and Development
Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity
Bio
Dr. Kara Miller McCarty is the Managing Director of Training and Development at Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. She earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Gannon University, where she joined Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority. She furthered her education with a master’s degree in higher education administration from the College of William and Mary and a doctorate in higher education leadership from Colorado State University.
Dr. McCarty has held significant roles in higher education, including serving as the Director of Sorority and Fraternity Life at Cornell University. She has also been actively involved in professional organizations, notably as President of the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors (AFA).
Joining Pi Kappa Phi in 2024, Dr. McCarty leads the training and development team, overseeing learning management systems and assessment, supporting the fraternity’s educational strategy through curriculum development and leadership training, and integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion into all programming.
In her personal life, Dr. McCarty enjoys reading, attending concerts and plays, spending time outdoors, and volunteering as a National Vice President for Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority. She is also a pet lover, with three black and white dogs named Cooper, Churchill, and Touchdown.
Chief of Staff to the President
SUNY at Geneseo
Bio
Wendi R. Kinney is a distinguished higher education professional with a focus on student affairs and fraternity/sorority life. She currently serves as the Chief of Staff to the President at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Geneseo, a position she has held since 2018.
Ms. Kinney’s career at SUNY Geneseo began in 2001, where she initially served as the Associate Dean of Students, overseeing fraternity/sorority life and off-campus student services. In this role, she was recognized nationally as an expert in Greek organization advisement.
Her professional involvement extends to leadership positions in national organizations. She served as the 2019-2020 President of the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors and is a co-founder and past president of the SUNY Fraternity/Sorority Advisors Association.
Ms. Kinney’s contributions have been acknowledged through several awards, including the Sue Kraft Fussell Distinguished Service Award from the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors in 2015, the Outstanding Professional Award from the National Order of Omega in 2016, and the Outstanding Fraternity/Sorority Life Advisor award from Pi Kappa Phi in 2017. Within the SUNY system, she received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service in 2013.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology from SUNY Fredonia and a master’s degree in Higher Education Administration from the University at Buffalo.
Ms. Kinney’s extensive experience and leadership have significantly contributed to the development and support of fraternity and sorority life within the SUNY system and beyond.
